You must be this small to ride

Classic little shred session with the kids in La Clusaz. Burton put on a demo day for all the wee kids. My daughter got well involved and managed to pull off her first flatland 3. So cool to see all the kids getting stoked on snowboarding – I just wish more resorts were pro-active to snowboarding and break the tradition of alpine ski racing….give the future a choice. Check out Tia’s Rad skills on this wee video – sorry for no fancy editing, just wanted to throw it up there.

Signal snowboards 11/12 range

A whole heap of next years signal boards arrived last week – OG’s, park series and OMNI’s in an array of sizes. They all look super tight in terms of graphics, beautiful hand painted top sheets which really stand out. I’ve been testing out the 151 OG this week which is top notch. Subtle directional shape with a grippy tight sidecut, helped with a narrow waist width (244mm) and plenty of power in the tail. Great to be riding standard camber, the contacts lock into the snow for superb board control along the full edge length. With all signal boards, it feels so light on your feet – you really get the sense that you are manipulating the board to do exactly what you want – there is a real sense of being truly connected with your equipment. 10/10 – love it!

I have also been riding the 11/12 OMNI 153 for some time now and it is as good as last years, which ended up being my board of choice last winter. I was a bit skeptical of the wavelength technology to begin with, but I have found this board simply divine to ride. Having the contact points located under your feet means you can stay extremely centred, stacked and solid whilst getting the board to perform. This allows you to be more skilful without compromising balance. Great fun playing with the 5 degree rocker tip and tail means jibing is effortless and you can get a better float on a shorter board in powder. I have introduced this board to half a dozen good riders and they cannot believe how good the board is – particularly when compared to riding other brands rocker/camber hybrids. Nice work Dave and Marc, your board designs really are off the hook.

Trapped in Aeroski

Last Friday we had the joy of being stuck in the Aeroski bubble for 3 1/2 hours. The end result was getting very hot, sweaty, thirsty, loads of angry birds and eventually rescued by being lowered by rope through the safety hatch 100ft below. Pretty awesome watching the rescue team shimmy down the cable to get to our bubble, pretty crap missing out on a mornings riding – sorry Tony + Neil.

Heli-riding Chamonix (well, Switzerland!)

Had an amazing day out over the weekend. Was invited on a covert heli-riding operation with a group of elite snowboarders who must remain anonymous. If I told you who they where then I’d have to….. you know what. Seriously though that is something I could get used to. What an epic day out, even if the snow conditions weren’t that great. Check out some of the shots – video to follow.

Interski Congress – St Anton 2011

Currently in St Anton this week representing Great Britain (BASI) as part of the Snowboard Demonstration Team with fellow team mates Ben Kinnear and Mark Petty. The concept of Interski is a meeting of all nations worldwide to demonstrate, run workshops and exchange ideas about current teaching and technical trends in Snowboarding.

Level 3 training week – Massive sucess

Training week ran last week at full capacity and was a real success. So much so that 2 more courses are being planned: 7th March -11th March and 28th March to 1st April. Training costs will be as before – Still waiting to confirm accommodation costs. Thanks to Dai, David, Jay, Ben, Rich and Mike for putting up with me blabbering on, pulling their riding apart and knackering them out! For more details and information on March courses, please send me a mail to neil@mcnairsnowsports.com.

Riding Freshies yesterday with Duncan

You all know there has been some snowfall in the Alps – well the proof is in the pudding. These photos were taken yesterday (26th October) on a shred session with Duncan. The snow on the glacier is unreal, but these shots were taken on double M all the way to Tignes. Not officially open and had to hop the occasional rock but man the snow was epic. This should get your juices flowing for a shred.

Winter has arrived

Heavy snowfalls overnight has turned Tignes white. 20cm has fallen at my gaff (1550 meters) so just just imagine what it’s like high up! Photos taken at 8am this morning. Bring on the shred.

Light dusting of snow

Low temperatures for the last 5 days and several light dustings of snow have given Tignes the first real winter feel of the year. There is a large front of snow forecast for the weekend which will hopefully start to cement a base. The picture below was taken this afternoon (20/10/10)
