Lewis learning double-corks

Here’s a wee glimpse of Lewis’s third double cork attempt yesterday He went a big too big on this one! – Lewis rides for Signal and as ambassador for McNair shirts he’s definitely putting the prototype through it’s paces. Unfortunately his board took such a beating the nose snapped. Fortunately we’ve managed to hook him up a replacement quick smart. Good news is he stomped them today. In his own words “it’s real easy once you slow things down and work out where you are in the air, they feel super cool” – if only snowboarding was this simple for the rest of us! Nice one Lewis. Video of is stomped double corks shouldn’t be long away.

Boiled Wool

So the McNair Mountain shirt is on it’s way. check out the website http://www.mcnairshirts.com for updates, but you’re wondering what it’s made of then here is a little description of boiled wool

Backcountry week

Last week was without doubt an epic week of snow and was well appreciated by the crew on the backcountry week in conjunction with the White Room chalets in Sainte Foy. Plenty of hikes, splitboard tours and POWagbunga. Here is a video of Jeff capturing himself in all his own glory dropping in from the Cross – nice one Twankey!

Couloir de Tourne and the Middle Finger

Amazing day yesterday with riding buddy and UK freeride legend Will Hughes. Managed to get 2 new lines that I have been eyeing up for a while. The first was the Couloir de Tourne (known locally as Alaska). It’s hard to hit this line with the right conditions as it has a southerly aspect and doesn’t always hold good snow. Everytime I’ve tried to ascend this peak I’ve always had to turn back as the hike up the chimney couloir round the back can cause problems. On Friday we managed to get up without too much trouble, although crampons would have made it a whole lot easier. The snow on the ride down was slightly wind affected but the lower you got and the further to the riders right, the more protected, softer and drier it became. I was so stoked to get a strong safe line down this couloir as it’s been my nemesis for several years and it stares me right in the face everytime I get off the palafour lift.

After Couloir du Tourne we stopped for a quick brew then decided to ride the middle finger. The “fingers” (Les Tuffs) are the imposing couloirs above the lake in Tignes. They’re are a number that are rideable but neither myself nor Will had descended the middle finger. This has a sketchy entrance as we found and a tight section in the middle. Was quite a technical descend for the first half of the couloir. Plenty of rock scratching at the top, Will got pushed down a bit on a big sluff slide which took the majority of the good snow and we had to slowly work our way down. As it started to open out towards the bottom, the snow and contours got really good – slash happy heaven. Below is a shot from the entrance and Will laying out his heels at the bottom. Man it was an epic friday morning – stoked!

Last minute B/C course spaces opened up for next week

Due to a last minute cancellation, we have a couple of spaces opened up on next weeks Back country course in Sainte Foy, run in conjunction with The White Room Chalet company in Sainte Foy. EMS Training, Courchevel

Day 1 of EMS training (European Mountain Safety) done. Great day working on transceiver searches, digging emergency snow-holes, snow pit analysis, rope work and a gentle tour. Sun was out, mild January temperatures and a really cool group, all lead by UIAGM mountain guide, Paul Farmer. Just finished route planning for tomorrow tour starting at Col de Chanrossa and working our way down and up to the Petit Mont Blanc before descending back down towards Vallee des Avals. Looks around 600mts vert in total and a 4hr round trip. Weather looks really clear and settled for the next few days so perfect touring conditions – stoked. Here’s a few photo’s today of the crew (4 split boarders and 2 ski tourers….splitting is the future!)

Merry xmas and Happy New Year

First of all, apologies for the lack of updates on my Blog, if i’m honest, I’ve been having too much fun riding and not had the time nor energy to write about it! The month of December has given us some amazing snow conditions, but at the same time an unpredictable snowpack. There have been a few fatalities in our region over the past month so we have been moving about with extra care. The pack seems to be stabilising now and today I made my first accent of the winter up the Foglietta in Sainte Foy. Mellow 20cm dusting gave the already deep snowpack a lovely light feel, especially on the higher wind affected pitches. Plenty of plans over the next few weeks, particularly with the arrival of the Signal splitboard fleet so hopefully I will find the time and energy to update on my site, otherwise you should see some pictures on my Instagram page (mcnairsnowsports). Here’s a selection of the past few weeks.
